Identifying Irish Scout Badges
It can be difficult to identify Irish Scout badges especially those with old Gaelic text. Various symbols were used to represent letters of the Gaelic alphabet, the image above shows what these symbols translate to when using the modern alphabet. Most online translators will translate the text on a badge reasonably accurately when the modern equivalent is used.
Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland (C.B.S.I.) C.B.S.I. and C.S.I. used a red cross with rounded ends with a green shamrock in the centre. The colour of the cross was changed to suit the colour scheme of the badge. |
Scout Association of Ireland (S.A.I.) The S.A.I. used a stylized Scout symbol with a green shield in the middle. The was used on most badges although like the C.B.S.I. not often on Activity Badges. |
