Scouting Ireland S.I. Emblem worn on the left shirt pocket.

National Badge


Scouting Ireland S.I. The Ireland Badge, can be worn on the uniform on the right chest side by all sections and they are encouraged to do so especially when travelling abroad.

There are 2 versions of the Ireland Badge, the Irish Flag and the European Union flag, the member is free to choose which version they wish to wear, and only one version can be worn.


Adult Leaders


Scouting Ireland S.I. This is the current (2014) Leader Trainer Wood Beads Badge worn by the people who train leaders.

Unit Leader
Cub Leader

These wood bead badges were issued by Scouting Ireland C.S.I. up to 2010 and were worn by leaders undergoing training for their wood beads. Each section had a different colour border:

  • Beaver – Grey,
  • Cub – Green,
  • Scout – Red,
  • Venture – Maroon,
  • Unit Leader – White,
  • Leader Trainer – Blue,
  • Commissioned – Gold.


Rover Scouts


Investiture Badge
Measures 48mm across, black felt backing.  Worn on the Rover Scout uniform in combination with the Leadership and Participation badges.

Participation Badge
Black felt backing measures 42mm by 30mm. Worn on the Rover Scout uniform in combination with the Investiture and Leadership badges.
Leadership Badge
Black felt backing measures 42mm by 30mm. Worn on the Rover Scout uniform in combination with the Investiture and Leadership badges.

Measures 26mm by 26mm, black felt backing. The badge was awarded when the Rover Scout had finished with Rover Scouts and could be worn on the uniform if training as a leader or at Scout events the Rover was attending after he had left Rovers.


Venture Scouts




 Scouting Ireland Venture Scout Investiture badge (current issue 2010). The badge measures 80mm by 30mmwith a black felt backing.
Scouting Ireland Venture Scout Suas Badge. Suas is the Gaelic for up. This badge was awarded after the investiture badge. The badge measures 75m by 35mm and has a black felt backing. Current issue (2010).

Scouting Ireland Venture Scout Trasna Badge. Trasna is Gaelic for Across. This badge was awarded after the Suas badge. The badge measures 75mm by 35mm with a black felt backing. Current issus (2010).
The badge was in used between 2004 and 2010 when the design changed for the One Programme. Awarded to the Venture Scout when invested and was also worn on the Rover Scout uniform to show service in Venture Scouts.

Scouting Ireland ONE Programme issue, measures 26mm by 26mm, black felt backing.

Unlike the previous Scouting Ireland version of this badge it was awarded when the Venture Scout was invested into Rover Scouts and worn on the Rover Scout uniform to show the wearer had previous service in Venture Scouts.

Venture Scout Name Strip

This was the first version used by Scouting Ireland from 2004 it was available in a verity of sizes and was used up to about 2010 when the One Programme was introduced. The same design was used by each section with different colour borders and Scouting Ireland emblem used to distinguish each section, I think it went:

  • Grey for Beavers

  • Red for Cubs

  • Green for Scouts

  • Yellow for Ventures.

Scouting Ireland Patrol Rank Badges

Scouting Ireland Current issue (2010) Assistant Patrol Leader rank stripe.


Patrol Rank Stripes
Used by Scouting Ireland between 2004 and 2010, they are very similar if not identical to the design used by the S.A.I.  Single stripe for Assistant Patrol Leader, double stripe for Patrol Leader and triple strips for senior patrol leader.


Leadership Award
Leadership Award. Worn under the Patrol rank stripe. Used between 2004 and 2010.

Star Scout
Scouting Ireland award scheme. Measures 40mm by 40mm. The badge is one of four which are part of the Progression scheme and a Scout had to complete all four before going for the Chief Scout Award.


This design was issued between 2004 and 2010 and was replaced in 2010 with the introduction of the One Programme.


Explorer Badge
Scouting Ireland award scheme. Measures 40mm by 40mm. The badge is one of four which are part of the Progression scheme and a Scout had to complete all four before going for the Chief Scout Award.

Scout Discovery Badge

Measures 60mm by 60mm with black felt backing. The badge is the first of four in the Scouting Ireland progressive badge scheme.  The badge was introduced in 2010 as part of the ONE programme.


Terra Nova Badge
Measures 40mm by 44mm with black felt backing. The badge is the second of four in the Scouting Ireland progressive badge scheme.  The badge was introduced in 2010 as part of the ONE programme.


Endurance Badge
Measures 40mm by 44mm with black felt backing. The badge is the second of four in the Scouting Ireland progressive badge scheme.  The badge was introduced in 2010 as part of the ONE programme.


Polar Badge
Measures 40mm by 42mm with black felt backing. The badge is the second of four in the Scouting Ireland progressive badge scheme.  The badge was introduced in 2010 as part of the ONE programme.

Previous Service Badges.

With the introduction of the ONE programme in 2010 the policy on wearing previous service badges changed. Before 2010 the Previous Service Badge was awarded to the Scout when invested into Scouts, after 2010 the previous Service Badge was awarded when the Scout was invested into Venture Scouts, the new rule applied to all sections.
The badge was in used between 2004 and 2010 when the design changed for the One Programme. Awarded to the Scout when invested and was also worn on the Venture and Rover Scout uniform to show service in Scouts.

Measures 26mm by26mm, black felt backing. The badge was awarded when the Scout was invested into Venture Scouts and worn on the Venture Scout uniform to show the wearer had previous service in Scouts.

Scout Eagle Patrol

In 2010 Scouting Ireland introduced new Lodge, Six. Patrol, Unit identification badges. Each badge measures approximately 70mm by35mm and had black felt backing. The same design and colour is used by all sections.

Scouting Ireland Sea Scouts

Gasóga Mara. Scouting Ireland Sea Scout chest patch. I think this is still current (2014). The patch measures 140mm by 37mm and is supplied to Irish speaking Sea Scout Troops to be stitched over the Sea Scouts embroidered onto the Sea Scout jumper.

Cub Scouts

Scouting Ireland S.I. Cub Scout Tenderfoot badge. Although officially known as the Tenderfoot Badge it was more commonly known as the Cub Scout Membership Badge because it was awarded to a Cub when Invested. The badge was in use in the 1990s and into the 2000s. The requirement for the badge were:

  • Be familiar with the Pack and Den.

  • Know the Cub Scout Law and Promise.

  • Know the Salute and Handshake.

  • Do a good turn every day for a week.

  • Know about the World Scout Emblem.

  • Know the Mowgli story

  • Know the Baden-Powell Story.


Scouting Ireland Cub Scout Bronze Arrow, measures 55mm by 45mm. Used by the Scout Association of Ireland from 1990s up to about 2004 in remained in use in some areas up to 2010 when it was replaced by the One Programme.

Scouting Ireland S.I. Cub Scout Silver Arrow badge. The badge was in use in the 1990s and into the 2000s.


Scouting Ireland S.I. Cub Scout Gold Arrow badge. The badge was in use in the 1990s and into the 2000s.

Catholic Scouts of Ireland and Scouting Ireland. Sixer, measures 50mm by 50mm, used by Scouting Ireland C.S.I. From 1999 to 2004 and by Scouting Ireland from 2004 to 2010.

Catholic Scouts of Ireland and Scouting Ireland. Seconder, measures 60mm by 20mm used by Scouting Ireland C.S.I. from 1999 to 2004 and Scouting Ireland from 2004 to 2010.


The badge was in used between 2004 and 2010 when the design changed for the One Programme. Awarded to the Cub Scout when invested and was also worn on the Scout, Venture and Rover Scout uniform to show service in Cub Scouts.

The Scouting Ireland current issue (2014) Sixer badge is designed to fit with the current Cub Scout membership badge.

Scouting Ireland S.I. Seconder Badge. Like the Sixer Badge it is designed to fit the current issue Cub Membership Badge,current issue (2014).


Scouting Ireland S.I. current issue (2014) Turas, the first of three badges in the progression scheme. Turas is the Irish for Journey.


Scouting Ireland S.I. current issue (2014) Taisteal, the second of three badges in the progression scheme. Taisteal is the Irish for Travel.

Scouting Ireland S.I. Tagann current issue (2014), the second of three badges in the progression scheme. Tagann is the Irish for arrive.

Six Identification Badge

This was the first version used by Scouting Ireland from 2004 it was available in a verity of sizes and was used up to about 2010 when the One Programme was introduced. The same design was used by each section with different colour borders and Scouting Ireland emblem used to distinguish each section, I think it went:

The badge is given to Beaver Scouts at their investiture, current issue (2014).
