Irishmen in the Royal Navy Kiled During WW1

Below is a Roll of Irishmen who lost their lives while serving with the Royal Navy during World War 1. Listed are those who gave their place of birth as Ireland when enrolling into the navy. The Roll contains the names of those who died serving at home and throughout the world.

Because the bodies of many Royal Navy personnel who died at sea could not be recovered for burial a memorial was built at the three major naval ports to commemorate those who lost their lives at sea. These memorials were built at:
  • Chatham
  • Portsmouth.
  • Plymouth.

Many Irishmen are commemorated on these memorials, I have included more information on each memorial further down the page.

Plymouth Naval Memorial

The memorial at Plymouth contains the names of 7,251 Royal Naval personnel who lost their lives at sea and have no known graves. It is of the same obelisk design as Chatham and Portsmouth Naval Memorials. With the addition of WW2 names the design of the structure around the three memorial differed.

With the names of the 7,251 sailors who lost their lives in WW1 the Plymouth Memorial also contains the names of 15,933 who lost their lives in the Second World War.
