Sophia Violet Barrett, Nurse, Voluntary Aid Detachment. Died on the 10th of November when the R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed in the Irish Sea. She was returning to duty in France.

Charles H S Brown, 8996 Lance-Corporal, 1st Bn. Leinster Regiment, killed in action in France 6th of April 1915. He was born in Ferns County Wexford. He is remembered on Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.

William Alexander Coates, 25145, Private, Royal Irish Regiment 7th (South Irish Horse) Bn., Son of Susan Coates, of 2, Brighton Cottages, Foxrock, Co. Dublin, and the late Alexander Coates; husband of Maude Coates. Worked as a Groom before enlisting.

William Oswald Halpin, Captain, Royal Army Medical Corps attached 4th (Queen's Own) Hussars. Died on the 10th of August 1918 aged 31, he was the Son of W. O. and Anna Maria Halpin, of The Laurels, Foxrock, Co. Dublin. He was Educated at Trinity College, Dublin, B.A., M.D., M.B., B.Ch. and B.A.O. He is buried in the Villers-Bretonneux Military Cemetery, Somme France.

Geoffrey Cecil Monck Hamilton, Second Lieutenant, 8th Bn. Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 7th of September 1916 aged 21. He was the son of Arthur and Alma Hamilton of Kerrymount Ballybrack Dublin. He is buried in Guillemont Road Cemetery Somme France. His Father was a Land Agent and he had 3 brothers and 2 sisters.

Nathaniel Frederick Hone, Lieutenant, 3rd Bn. attached. 9th Bn. Royal Irish Rifles. Born in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) where his father was a tea planter in. He died on the 1st of July 1916 aged 18 he was the Elder son of Nathaniel Mathew Hone and Lillian Gertrude Hone, late of Glenbourne, Sandyford, Co. Dublin. He is buried in Tincourt New British Cemetery Somme, France.

Robert Andrew Ferguson Smyly King, Lieutenant, 2nd Bn. Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 23rd of May 1915 aged 19. He was the Son of the Rev. Canon Richard G. S. King and Dorothea (Smyly), his wife, of The Rectory, Limavady, Co. Derry. Commissioned from Sandhurst, Nov., 1914. He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Francis Arthur Marrable, 14177, Serjeant, "D" Company. 7th Bn. Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 18th of August 1915 aged 28. He was the Son of Arthur and Mary Ann Marrable, of Druid Hill, Cabinteely, Co. Dublin and was a Chartered accountant before the War. He had 1 sister and both his parents were born in England.

Samuel Tyndall Nelson, 106454, Sergeant, 1st Canadian Mounted Rifles Battalion. Died on the 18th of September 1916 aged 37. He was Son of William Joseph and Annie Nelson, of Kerrymount Cottage, Foxrock, Dublin. Served 6 years in the 7th Hussars, also served in the South African Campaign in that Regiment. He is buried in the Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Archibald Hugh O’Farrell, Second Lieutenant, 1st Bn. Irish Guards. He died on the 27 of September 1918 Aged 19. He was the only son of Sir Edward O'Farrell, K.C.B., and Dorothy, Lady O'Farrell, of Cuilnagreine, Carrickmines, Co. Dublin. He is buried in Sanders Keep Military Cemetery, Graincourt-les-Havrincourt, France.

Hugh Stewart, Lieutenant Colonel, 94th Field Ambulance. Royal Army Medical Corps. He died on the 12th of April 1918 aged 38. He was the Son of Capt. and Mrs. Stewart, of Kilkenny; husband of Muriel Dalzell Stewart, of 4, Rostrevor Terrace, Rathgar, Dublin. He is buried in Borre churchyard Nord, France and also commemorated on his parent’s headstone in Dean’s Grange Cemetery Dublin.

Arthur Hone Wilson, Lieutenant, 4th Battalion. Attached. 7th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. He died on the 8th of November 1916 aged 21. he was the Son of William Henry and Emily Charlotte Wilson, of Carrickmines, Co. Dublin. He is buried in Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

Charles Robert Wilson, Second Lieutenant, 88th Company Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died on the 24th of May 1917 aged 31. He was the Son of William Henry and Emily Charlotte Wilson, of Carrickmines House, Carrickmines, Co. Dublin and brother of the above Arthur Hone Wilson. He is buried in Level Crossing Cemetery Fampoux, Pas de Calais, France. He was a stock broker before enlisting.

William Mathew O’Grady Young, Service number 208, Corporal, 7th Australian Light Horse. Died from wounds not received in action on the 28th of December 1915 aged 41. He is buried in the Cairo War Memorial Cemetery, Egypt. He was the Son of James Young, B.A., J.P., and Grace E. Young. He served with the Imperial Yeomanry for 1 year and 88 days and had also served 6 and a half years with the South African Constabulary.

Harry Fitzherbert, Service Number 139211, Captain, 2nd Battalion Irish Guards. Died on the 2nd of April 1945 aged 36. He was the Son of Eden and Dorothy Fitzherbert; husband of Sheelah Fitzherbert, of Rathfarnham, Co. Dublin. He is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery Germany.

Michael King Maconchy, Service Number 165062. he died on the 1 of August 1944 aged 24. he was the Son of John King Maconchy and Stella Dorothy Maconchy; husband of Joanna Elizabeth Maconchy, of street. Marylebone, London. He is buried in Saint Charles De Percy War Cemetery, Calvados, France.


Sophia Violet Barrett

Sophia Violet Barrett known as Violet was returning to France to resume her duties as a nurse with the Voluntary Aid Detachment (V.A.D.) of which she was a member. V.A.D’s were drawn from the Red Cross Society and Saint John Ambulance Brigade and provided Nurses and Medical Auxiliaries both at home and on the battle field. Violet’s aunt Marcella was married to William Wilson of Carrickmines House Foxrock County Dublin Violet lived in Foxrock with her aunt and uncle and joined the Carrickmines branch of the V.A.D. in 1915.

Violet served as a nurse at home in Dublin and in England until she was posted to France in April 1916. She served at Number 6 General Hospital Rouen and Number 2 Stationary Hospital Abbeyville France. She was mentioned in dispatches and spent the last month of her nursing career nursing wounded German prisoners of war.

While living in Dublin Violet attended Tully Church, Foxrock, in 1919 fellow members of the Carrickmines Saint John Ambulance Nursing Division presented the Church with a silver chalice bearing the inscription To the glory of God and in memory of Sophia Violet Barrett, torpedoed in R.M.S. Leinster October 1918, when returning to duty in France. Presented to Tully Church by her fellow members of Carrickmines St. John Ambulance Nursing Division. The chalice is still used every Sunday.
