WW1 Memorial Mariner’s Church Dun Laoghaire


The World War 1 Memorial in the Mariner’s Church in Dun Laoghaire records the names of those connected with the church that died in the Great War. The Church was built in 1837. The Church was designed to meet the needs of the seafarers whose vessels sought shelter in Kingstown harbour. The church could accommodate 1400 people and the Deed of Trust stated that one third of the seating was to accommodate the families of those in the seafaring, coastguard and revenue services.




  • John Barrett 10165 Private 1st Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 6th of August 1915. Buried/Remembered Pink Farm Cemetery Helles Turkey.

  • Reginald John Godfrey Bateman Captain 46th Battalion Canadian Infantry. Died on the 3rd of September 1918 aged 34. Remembered Vimy Memorial Pas de Calais France. Son of Godfrey Bateman, LL.D., and Frances Emily Bateman, of 14, Adelaide St., Kingstown, Co. Dublin, Ireland. M.A., Sen. Mod., Stewart School, Trinity College (Dublin). Professor of English, University, Saskatoon and brother of Arthur Bateman (see below)

  • Arthur Cyril Bateman Captain Royal Army Medical Corps (attached to the 7th Bn. Cameron Highlanders). Died on the 28 of March 1918 aged 27. Remembered on the Pozieres Memorial Somme France. Son of Godfrey Bateman, LL.D., and the late Frances Emily Bateman, of 28, Clarinda Park East, Kingstown, Co. Dublin and brother of Reginald Bateman (see above)

  • James Angus Brewer Captain 9th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment. Died on the 18th of September 1918 aged 25. Mentioned in Despatches. Buried/Remembered Karasouli Military Cemetery Greece.  Second son of Lt. William Hy. Brewer (R.N.), and Mary Anne Brewer, of 15, Northumberland Avenue, Kingstown, Co. Dublin.

  • Charles Canning 3173 Corporal 4th Battalion Leinster Regiment (recorded on C.W.G.C. as 2nd Battalion). Died on the 16th of October 1918. Buried in Dean’s Grange Cemetery Dublin.  Served as CULLEN. Son of Mrs. Sarah A. Canning, of 38, Merville Place, Kingstown, Dublin.

  • Cecil Bradshaw Darley 10th Battalion Canadian Infantry (Expeditionary Force). Died on the 21st of May 1915 aged 29. Remembered on the Vimy Memorial Pas de Calais France. Son of Charlotte E. Darley, of Carrick-on Shannon, Ireland, and the late Capt. Henry S. Darley. Brother of Frederick Darley (see below).

  • Fred Frederick Bradshaw Darley 51132 Private 10th Canadian Light Infantry (Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry Eastern Ontario). Died on the 22nd of November 1916. Buried Hanwell (City of Westminster) Cemetery, Middlesex. UK. Son of Mrs.C.E.Darley, of West Ealing, London. Brother of Cecil Darley (see above).

  • F.W. Davey 2635/A Seaman H.M.S. President III (Shore Base) killed in action on the 27th of December 1917 when his ship S.S. "Adela" a cargo ship, a 3 masted iron steamer owned by R Tedcastle and company Coal Merchant Dublin working the Dublin to Liverpool service. He was 28 years old and is remembered on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire, UK. Son of Thomas Lee Davey and the late Sarah Anne Davey; husband of Sarah Alice Davey, of 3, Crofton Avenue, Kingstown, Co. Dublin. Native of Devon.

  • James Dixon Second Lieutenant Royal Engineers. Died on the 5th of August 1917. Buried/Commemorated Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery Heuvelland, West-Vlaanderen Belgium.

  • Robert Gray 105154 Corporal 191st Training Squadron Royal Air Force. Died on the 2nd of November 1918 aged 25 years old. Buried in Dean’s Grange Cemetery (S. M. 12). Son of John Gray, of 2, Crofton Avenue, Dun Laoghaire.

  • James John Harris Australian 3819 55th Battalion Australian Infantry (Expeditionary Force).  Died on the 20th of July 1916 aged 25. Buried/Commemorated V.C. Corner Australian Cemetery and Memorial. He was the only son of James and Kate Harris, East Pier Battery, Kingstown. James Harris was educated in the Mariners' Church Schools, was a member of the Kingstown Company of the Boys' Brigade.

  • Arthur H. Jeffries Wireless Operator R.M.S. Leinster. Died on the 10th of October 1918 when the S.S. Leinster was sunk by a German U-Boat in the Irish Sea. He was 27 years old and is buried in Dean’s Grange Cemetery Dublin. Born at Cambridge. Son of Richard Jeffries; husband of Margaret Jeffries (formerly Torkington, nee Smith), of Monaster Lodge, Glenageary Rd., Kingstown.



 Herbert Colles Kennedy 269041 Gunner 28th Reserve Battalion Royal Field Artillery. Died on the 15th of October 1918 aged 19. He is buried in Dean’s Grange Cemetery Dublin. Son of the Very Rev. Dean H. B. Kennedy, B.D., of Corrig Castle, Kingstown.


  • Finlay Kerr Lieutenant 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment. Died on the 5th of July 1916 aged 22. Buried/Commemorated Thiepval Memorial Somme France. Son of Finlay Kerr, M.R.C.V.S., and Annie Constance Kerr, of 2, Clarinda Park West, Kingstown, Co. Dublin.

  • George Stuart Kinch 760201 102nd Battalion Canadian Infantry (Irish) Canadian Regiment. Died on the 24th of May 1917 aged 37. Buried/Commemorated Ste. Marie Cemetery Seine-Maritime France. Son of George and Ellen Kinch, of Kingstown, Ireland; husband of Edith Sarah Kinch, of Avonbury, Blackwell, Bromsgrove, Worcestershire, England.

  • Thomas Mellefont 9887 Rifleman 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Rifles. Died on the 26th of October 1914. Buried/Commemorated Le Touret Memorial Pas de Calais France.

  • Walter Mills 24579 Lance Corporal 5th Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Died on the 27th of April 1916. Buried/Commemorated Loos Memorial Pas de Calais France.

  • Richard Shackleton 2nd Lieutenant North Staffordshire Regiment. Died on the 8th of June 1917 the Battle of Messines, France aged 24. Born in Roscrea, County Tipperary, Ireland.

  • Robert Stanton 13014 Private 6th Battalion Royal Irish Fusiliers. Died on the 9th of August 1915. Buried/Commemorated Helles Memorial Turkey.
